Recall of gel fuel

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled NAPA fire and FIREGEL, these  products have been sold at:
  • Bed Bath & Beyond
  • Shopko
  • Restoration Hardware
  • specialty and gift shops
  • furniture stores
  • and home and garden stores nationwide
  • as well as through Amazon.com
  • home and garden catalogs
  • and home decorators and landscape architects
between December 2009 and June 2011 for between $5 and $78. Consumers should immediately stop using the pourable gel fuel in firepots and return all bottles or jugs to the retailer where the consumer purchased the fuel for a full refund.

I watched a morning news program yesterday where they showed how these products have been responsible for many severe burns. The scariest part is how the flames are invisible and that is where many consumers have had the problems. For example people have not seen the flame and either tried to refill the fuel well while it is ignited or moved it and splashed the ignited gel on themselves or even the family dog. The flames can only be put out with a dry chemical like a fire extinguisher or baking soda…..I don’t think I have ever seen baking soda at a BBQ or even a fire extinguisher?
